Dr. Jon Mendelsohn, medical director of Advanced Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Center in Cincinnati has made some predictions regarding the Top Plastic Surgery Trends For 2017
Mendelsohn feels that the “selfie”- awareness movement will continue to grow. He says, “Love them or hate them, ‘selfies’ are here to stay and they are affecting the way that individuals see themselves. Social media has given a huge boost to both the surgical and non-surgical side of our business – including injectables, laser and light-based skin treatments as well as facelifts, Blepharoplasties (upper and lower eyelid lifts) and Rhinoplasties. Approximately 1 in 3 plastic surgeons nationwide have seen a surge in the number of procedures performed due to the social media/selfie phenomenon.”
He continues, “And according the Investors.com, more than 9 million posts on Instagram are tagged #selfiesunday, 6 million-plus are marked #selfienation and 275 milion are tagged #selfie and another 302 million are simply tagged #me.”
He adds “Capitalizing on the selfie craze, we launched an educational campaign this year called ‘True Selfies.’ The campaign features a series of print ads and emotionally charged videos of real patients who share their stories behind the thought process they went through as well as the catalyst or unique motivating factors that led them to undergo a particular surgical procedure. The videos actually capture real one-on-one consultations with patients, the pre-operative experience, the actual procedure inside the O.R. and the post-operative journey as well. ‘True Selfies’ has been very well received, as prospective patients enjoy hearing the candid stories of ‘real’ patients who tell it like it is, rather than from scripted models. As a direct result of this campaign, more than 80% of our patients are ready to move forward with their procedures before they come in for their consultations, compared with approximately 50% from year’s past.”
Mendelsohn adds, “Another trend that I expect to continue is the continued rise in ‘prejuvenation’ treatments by Millennials. The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) reports a 64% increase by member facial plastic surgeons in injectable treatments in the under 30 crowd. They are using these treatments as a preventative measure, as facial muscles that cause wrinkles can be trained to move less, thus stopping wrinkles before they start. Our practice has seen a dramatic increase of approximately 38% with this age group as well over the past three years, with many young women following in their mother’s footsteps. Early maintenance starting in the 20’s and 30’s may ultimately delay the need for cosmetic surgery down the road.”
Says Mendelsohn, “ Last year I predicted that seniors would continue to account for an increasingly larger percentage of our plastic surgery patients. The over 70 demographic want to look as young as they feel, as they live an increasingly fulfilling and active life. I have performed an increasing number of both Facelifts and Blepharoplasties on patients in their 70’s and 80’s in 2016, and the numbers are up about 22% over the last four years. I believe that this number will continue to rise in 2017.”
