CINCINNATI, OH – November 27, 2015 – According to recent data released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, approximately 1.7 million cosmetic surgical procedures, 13.9 million cosmetic minimally-invasive procedures and 5.8 million reconstructive procedures were performed in 2014 – representing an overall 3% increase from the previous year.
So how do local Cincinnati plastic surgeons stack up against the national trends?
Dr. Jon Mendelsohn, medical director of Advanced Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Center says his business is up 18% year-to-date over last year, putting his practice way ahead of the national trend.
Says Mendelsohn, “We attribute a portion of this increase to the launch of our new Advanced Loyalty Rewards program in October 2014. This exclusive, members only club rewards our patients with countless benefits and discounts on products and services, as well as invitations to members-only events, points for every dollar spent, and double rewards points on select purchases. We enroll an average of 50 patients a month, and the program has been an overwhelming success.”
92% of all cosmetic procedures nationally were performed on women last year. At Advanced Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Center, 83% of the patients are female and 17% are male.
Why so many men?
Says Mendelsohn, “So many of our female patients start out by having a Blepharoplasty performed on their upper or lower eyelids or an Advanced facelift, and their husbands or significant others usually accompany them to the procedure. Once they witness firsthand how they the procedures are performed right in our office under local anesthesia, and how natural looking the results are, the men very often elect to have the same procedure.. And hearing a wife continually being complemented on her youthful appearance is often a catalyst for the husband or partner. The most common procedure nationally for men is a Rhinoplasty, and in our practice the most popular procedures for men are Facelifts, Blepharoplastys (eyelids) and Rhinoplastys (noses).”
Nationally women between the ages of 40-54 made up the majority of cosmetic procedures: 7.2 million cosmetic procedures were performed on middle aged women in 2014 – 530,000 of these were surgical and 6.7 million were minimally invasive. Advanced numbers follow the same pattern demographically, and for non-surgical treatments such as fillers and skin care, it skews even younger, with many 28-44 year olds falling into this category.
Mendelsohn adds, “The upcoming holiday season is typically the busiest season both nationally and locally for cosmetic treatments with requests for both surgical and non-surgical procedures up as much as 25% both locally and nationally. People are more social, during this time of year, and are often seeing friends and family that they have not seen in quite awhile, and want to look their best. A simple Botox or Juvederm injection can give them a much needed “shot” of confidence during an otherwise stressful time of year. We also sell a high volume of gift certificates for fillers and facial rejuvenation treatments during November and December, with our patients purchasing them for their spouse, parent, siblings or friends. Additionally, for those electing surgical or laser procedures or chemical peels, which may require a few days downtime, the holidays are often a time when many patients can afford to take a few days off work to heal.”
