Bigger isn’t necessary better when it comes to nipples. According to Dr. Jon Mendelsohn, Medical Director of Advanced Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Center, “The demand for smaller nipples is on an upward trend. There has been an estimated 30% increase both nationally and internationally for this type of surgery that past year alone and that number is expected to continue to rise.”
Mendelsohn continues, “Many patients having a breast lift or breast reduction also typically request the nipple or areola reduction during the same procedure. Both procedures require us to make an incision around the nipple in order to reposition it, and this is an opportune time for patients to also downsize it as well. It has become an increasingly popular procedure.
There is also an overall trend towards smaller breast augmentation sizes. While we used to see many patients requesting a 350-400cc (Double DD or E cup) a few years back, the average size is now 250-300cc, which is approximately a D or C cup.
Recent industry research studies have also indicated that smaller nipples are considered more attractive than large ones. The nipples which took up 50% or more of the overall breast space were considered too big, and those taking up only 25-30% of the overall breast space were considered more attractive. So the proportion of nipple to breast space is of high importance to those electing this type of surgery.
Mendelsohn concludes, “But no worries, some things are still better bigger – as the number of Brazilian Butt Lifts and the request for fuller, poutier lips both continue to rise.”
