SmartXide DOT Laser Q&A with Dr. Jon Mendelsohn
Explore answers to the most frequently asked questions about DOT Therapy—how it works, what it treats, and why it’s a powerful option for skin resurfacing and rejuvenation.
Set 1: Curious Novice
What is SmartXide DOT Therapy and how does it work?
SmartXide DOT Therapy is a fractional CO₂ laser that stimulates collagen production and renews skin texture through tiny micro-injuries. It improves wrinkles, scars, sun damage, and more by encouraging natural healing and regeneration.
Is this the same as laser skin resurfacing?
Yes, but it’s more advanced. DOT uses a pixelated pattern for faster healing and allows us to adjust settings by facial region—like softening lines around the mouth or smoothing crepey skin near the eyes.
What types of skin problems can this treatment help with?
DOT helps with fine lines, deep wrinkles, acne scars, sun damage, uneven tone, texture, and enlarged pores—especially around the eyes and lips.
Does it hurt? What should I expect during and after the procedure?
We apply a topical anesthetic. Most patients feel warmth or tingling. Expect redness and crusting for several days. See day-by-day recovery here. I’ve had it done personally—it’s messy but absolutely worth it.
How is this different from chemical peels or microneedling?
Laser resurfacing reaches deeper and with more precision. I can adjust six settings to customize the depth and results. After thousands of peels, I now prefer this for reliability and safety.
How long does the treatment take?
A full face takes 20–30 minutes once numbed. Smaller areas, like under the eyes, are quicker.
Is it safe for people with sensitive skin?
Yes—when done by an experienced provider. I always evaluate your history and skin type before adjusting parameters for safety and comfort.
Will my face look red or swollen after the treatment?
Yes, similar to a sunburn. Swelling and redness are expected for a few days. See recovery video here.
How soon will I see results?
You’ll see early results in 5–7 days with continued collagen-building improvements over 2–3 months.
What makes this treatment different from other lasers?
DOT offers customized pattern, depth, and density settings for more precise treatment and quicker healing than older lasers.
Set 2: Cautious Explorer
I’ve heard laser treatments can cause burns — how does DOT Therapy avoid that?
DOT treats only small zones at a time (fractionally), leaving skin between intact. This speeds recovery and avoids burns when done with the right settings and technique. We also use active cooling protocols.
What makes the SmartXide DOT CO₂ laser safer or more advanced than older technologies?
Older lasers treat the entire surface. DOT lets us control pulse width, energy, and spacing—giving safe, tailored, and effective treatments with less downtime.
Will I be able to go out in public after the treatment, or will I need time to hide away?
You’ll want 5–7 days of downtime before wearing makeup. Redness and peeling are normal. Humor helps—and results are worth the brief recovery.
Can this treat both wrinkles and acne scars at the same time?
Yes. It targets both in one session by stimulating collagen and resurfacing texture. I use specific settings for acne scars that offer results beyond traditional methods.
Is there a risk of hyperpigmentation, especially for darker skin tones?
There is some risk in Fitzpatrick IV–VI. I reduce depth and pre-treat with brighteners. For many patients of color, I may recommend the PicoSure laser instead for safety and efficacy.
How long does redness typically last?
Redness fades in 7–10 days. For more aggressive treatments, slight pinkness may last a few weeks, but can be covered with makeup after one week.
What’s the difference between DOT Therapy and traditional CO₂ lasers?
DOT treats in micro-columns (fractional), while older lasers treat full fields. This means less trauma, faster healing, and more comfort.
Will it tighten sagging skin or just improve texture?
It improves texture and induces collagen for some tightening—especially around the eyes and mouth. But it doesn’t replace a facelift. Think of it as “ironing the wrinkles” after “making the bed.”
How do I know if I’m a good candidate for this type of treatment?
If you have fine lines, texture issues, sun damage, or scars—and are healthy—you’re likely a great candidate. I’ll assess during your consultation.
Are the results permanent, or will I need multiple treatments?
Results are long-lasting but not permanent. Maintenance every 1–2 years is common. Deeper issues or body areas may need 2–3 treatments initially.
Set 3: Ready but Discerning
What parameters does Dr. Mendelsohn typically adjust for patients with advanced sun damage or deep wrinkles?
I use higher energy, increased dwell time, and wider spot patterns to reach deeper layers safely, allowing for collagen remodeling and skin renewal in more damaged areas.
How does Dr. Mendelsohn customize DOT pattern, density, and dwell time for different skin types?
I assess skin tone, sensitivity, and healing history. For darker skin types, I reduce density and energy. For lighter skin, I may increase depth or overlap depending on the goal.
Can you explain how collagen remodeling is stimulated with this specific laser?
DOT creates controlled thermal damage, which triggers fibroblasts in the dermis to produce new collagen and elastin—tightening and improving skin quality over weeks and months.
What is the healing timeline for a full-face treatment using Dr. Mendelsohn’s post-op protocol?
Expect 5–7 days of redness and crusting. We provide oxygenating gels, barrier creams, and daily/virtual check-ins to accelerate and support healing.
Does Dr. Mendelsohn combine DOT Therapy with other procedures, like blepharoplasty or fillers?
Yes, often. DOT is ideal after lower eyelid surgery or alongside fillers for a full rejuvenation—lifting, volumizing, and smoothing all in one plan.
How does he handle treatments for patients with previous laser or cosmetic procedures?
I always review past treatment areas and adjust laser settings accordingly to avoid overtreatment and ensure safe, effective results.
What kind of before-and-after results does Dr. Mendelsohn typically achieve, and does he offer a photo review session?
Yes. We review real cases during consultation to show results in skin tone, texture, and firmness. I also share videos when patients permit.
Is this procedure performed by Dr. Mendelsohn himself or by another team member?
If done with surgery, I perform it personally. For stand-alone cases, it’s done by Hope Merz, DNP, under my direct supervision.
How does Dr. Mendelsohn balance depth of penetration vs. recovery time for high-performing patients?
I fine-tune laser parameters to get the most result with the least downtime. We plan timing around your lifestyle and any upcoming events.
What kind of follow-up care does Dr. Mendelsohn’s office provide in the first 7–14 days?
Daily or every-other-day check-ins, recovery kits, virtual photo reviews, and open communication. You’re supported at every stage of healing.
