CINCINNATI, OHIO –January 5, 2022 – The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) released its 2020 member survey results, revealing that over the past few years, use of non-invasive procedures to delay the signs of aging have been steadily on the rise. However, the COVID-19 pandemic created a rise in surgical demand not seen in recent years. Despite the fact that many non-essential surgeries and aesthetic services were put on hold during the pandemic, AAFPRS members report that demand is now higher than ever. In fact, 70 percent of AAFPRS surgeons report an increase in bookings and treatments over the course of the pandemic.
Dr. Jon Mendelsohn of Advanced Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Center is no exception. Mendelsohn has seen his surgical business increase dramatically since reopening his doors after the initial pandemic surge in June, 2020. Facelifts are up 12%, Blepharoplasties, or eyelid lifts, are up 15%, and Rhinoplasties, or nose jobs, are up 20% Mendelsohn has added an extra surgical day in the OR to accommodate the rising surgical demand. Non-surgical treatments or injectables such as Botox and Fillers are up 20% as well.
Says Mendelsohn, “I believe that this increase in business can be attributed to several factors, the first being that both men and women have more time and flexibility to recover from treatments while working from home. Today’s facelifts, such as our Advanced Facelift are performed in about an hour under local anesthesia, with little downtime, a rapid recovery and little to no pain medication needed. When working in an office, our patients usually return to work within a week, after the sutures are removed. However, when working from home, patients are able to resume their zoom calls, and begin working from home the day following their surgery, after their bandages are removed.”
He continues, “Additionally, using video conferencing platforms such as Zoom, Skype and FaceTime have provided people with more time to look a bit more critically at their appearance, and heighten awareness of their facial features, such as their eyes, noses, faces and necks. This worldwide phenomenon has been referred to as a ‘Zoom Boom.’
Lastly, people are talking very candidly with one another about their cosmetic procedures, and sharing them openly social media, which has further fueled this plastic surgery frenzy. Plastic surgery is no longer a taboo subject, and our patients, in particular are very willing to share their stories of transformation in a series that we call ‘true selfies.’ When people see other people voicing the same concerns and sharing their positive outcomes, they are more likely to come in for a consult.”
Mendelsohn also has a few predictions about additional, new procedures for which the plastic surgery industry will see increased demand in 2022:
Cellulite Treatments Such As QWO: First introduced in 2021, Qwo is a new injectable treatment that takes 10 minutes or less, where collagenases are injected directly into cellulite and immediately goes to work dissolving collagen bands, reducing the look and feel of cellulite.
Thread lifts A thread lift is a type of procedure wherein temporary sutures are used to produce a subtle but visible “lift” in the skin. Instead of removing the patient’s loose facial skin surgically, the cosmetic surgeon simply suspends it by stitching up portions of it. This has the effect of pulling the skin back slightly and therefore lifting and tightening the face.
Alma Duo for men and women We began treating patients with this revolutionary, non-surgical painless procedure in 2021 to treat erectile dysfunction in men and improve sexual function in women.
Lip Flips By using Botox, you can temporarily relax a very small area of the muscle surrounding the lips, which causes the lip to roll slightly upward and appear more voluminous and defined.”
Mendelsohn concludes, “I don’t see this uptick in business ending any time soon. It’s been 18 months and we are still going strong!”
