CINCINNATI (WKRC) — Medical tourism, the practice of traveling abroad for complex surgical procedures to save money, is gaining popularity, particularly in the realm of hair transplants.
However, experts are cautioning against potential risks associated with this trend.
Dr. Jon Mendelsohn of Ohio’s Advanced Cosmetic Surgery and Laser Center, who regularly performs hair transplants, highlighted the financial allure of seeking such procedures overseas.
“Since they can cost up to about $20,000, many people head overseas to try and get them half price,” Mendelsohn said.
Despite the cost savings, Mendelsohn warned of the potential pitfalls.
“If you’re not careful, that can lead to bald spots,” said Mendelsohn.
He added that improperly performed procedures can result in hair being “over-stacked.”
Mendelsohn shared a success story of a patient who underwent brain tumor surgery and later received a hair transplant using proper techniques. The patient achieved satisfactory results, demonstrating the importance of choosing a qualified professional.
To ensure successful outcomes, Mendelsohn advised:
“Look for a board-certified plastic surgeon and do your homework before you head overseas.”
He emphasized the necessity of having a follow-up plan upon returning home in case of any complications.
