As an experienced injector, I go for the hyaluronic acid gel fillers for lips every time. The types we use include Restylane and Juvederm products, such as Juvederm ultra and ultra plus, Juvederm Volbella, Vollure and Voluma. The type of filler that your injector chooses to use depends on a variety of factors, such as the areas that are being treated, the severity of volume loss, facial anatomy, and budget, amongst others. The best type of filler for lips is a very personal decision. Someone may be just looking for the slightest bit of structuring to help correct an asymmetry to the upper lip, which should only require a half of a syringe of filler, so the choice would likely be juvederm volbella, since this is carried in a half-syringe and would be a cost-effective filler option. Another may be dealing with many years of volume loss and skin laxity and this patient would need more filler syringes and would need to treat more areas to achieve a great result. Ideally, we would place juvederm voluma in the midface or cheekbone area to get a lift and help turn up the corners of the lip. This also often involves placing some juvederm ultra plus or juvederm vollure into the nasolabial folds by the nose. Once these areas are corrected, the mouth area is secondarily improved and appears fuller, even though we haven’t placed filler there yet, because your lips have been returned to a more youthful state as your facial features have been restored. We can then structure and augment the lips as needed. It’s important to have a thorough consultation, where your injector can listen to what results you would like to achieve along with give suggestions according to your personal facial anatomy for the best lip filler outcomes.
