What is miraDry? (miraDry Treatment for Underarm Sweating 2020)
If you are searching for a means of dealing with hyperhidrosis, or looking for how to stop sweating, MiraDry may be your answer. Excessive sweating affects over 1% of the population. The stress associated with the feeling of sweat dripping, the social and professional embarrassment caused by resulting sweat rings and odor, the expense of laundering, dry cleaning and replacing clothing are all factors in seeking answers for how to stop sweaty armpits. MiraDry is the only permanent solution to this issue, and is truly life-changing for those with hyperhidrosis. Before discussing MiraDry I’d like to briefly review your other treatment options. Botox injections for excessive sweating will provide a long-lasting solution. Botox, or botulinum toxin type A, is the same medication injected to diminish facial wrinkles, and has a long history of safe use. FDA approved for axillary hyperhidrosis, treatment consists of placing multiple small injections of botox into the underarm area, which typically provides more than 80% sweating reduction for 6 months or more. Botox works by blocking acetylcholine, which sends a signal that activates the sweat gland, stopping the activity of the gland. This treatment can also be used for excessive sweating of the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. Cost will vary based on the number of units used, and will range from 600 dollars to 1000 dollars. Antiperspirants and deodorants can be used daily for control of armpit sweating and odor. Purchased over-the-counter or by prescription, these products rely on aluminum chloride to control sweating by actually blocking the sweat gland’s duct. These products may be helpful for milder cases, are affordable, and have a possible side effect of skin irritation and burning. MiraDry provides a treatment to eliminate sweaty armpits, sweat rings, and odor permanently. MiraDry was FDA approved in 2011. It uses thermal energy to heat and destroy the sweat glands in the underarm, eliminating wetness and odor permanently. After cleansing, the skin is numbed with a series of small injections. Once numb, a temporary treatment grid is applied. The handpiece is used in a specific pattern to gently suction to the skin, pulling the sweat glands into closer contact with the thermal energy. After heating, the skin is cooled by the handpiece to prevent skin injury. The treatment area is approximately the size of a thumbnail, so repeated applications are performed to treat the entire area. This is painless due to the numbing, and takes 15 to 30 minutes per side. Ice is applied immediately after treatment, and used during the next few days. Some tenderness and swelling is expected for 7 to 14 days due body’s reaction to the injury to the sweat glands. Sweating stops immediately due to the swelling, which blocks the sweat glands. The body gradually absorbs the damaged glands, which cannot return or grow back. Any that were not destroyed may need a second treatment if significant sweating remains after several months. Because this is a life-changing solution to such a difficult and costly issue, the cost of two to three thousand is considered well worth the result.
