It’s Sucker Fish and “Lips On Fire” in this “Don’t Waste Your Money” Valentine’s Edition of What’s in and what’s out and what’s hot and what’s definitely NOT in the world of plastic surgery with Josh and Julie.
Lip enhancements continue to increase in popularity each and every year. The global lip augmentation market size was valued at 2.2 billion dollars in 2019, and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 9.5% between now and 2027. However, these statistics are for FDA approved fillers, like the ones we use here at Advanced, NOT for unapproved or unproven gimmicks. Josh and I unearthed a few crazy gadgets that people are still trying at home in order to achieve fuller, poutier lips. Some of them suck – quite literally – and some of them may just burn you.
Here’s the first one that sucks. A giant red suction cup called FullLips that you suck on in 15-30 second increments until desired lip fullness is achieved. They say you will enjoy a gentle pulling as you suck. Fashionista gave it a big thumbs down, citing the fact that the suction can be very dangerous to the lips, potentially resulting in bruising, blistering, and extreme swelling. Yeah, hard pass on that one. What also sucks, the Candy Lipz Apple Lip Plumper which uses a Chinese suction cupping technique that claims to increase water retention in the lips for up to 24 hours. It says it’s fun and easy to use too! Take a look at this picture! It doesn’t look too fun to me –look at the giant indentation it makes in the bottom lip. Y- outch! And then there’s a Silicone Sucker Fish Lip Pump which looks quite fishy to me! You just place the fish’s mouth over your lips and suck.
Something is just plain WRONG with this. And please stay away from “Plump It” – top beauty reviewers have called it “the most painful lip treatment ever” saying that upon application, they immediately felt like their lips were on fire. It’s applied with a pen and lasts 2-12 hours. Does it come with a free fire extinguisher? Moving on to the electric models.
There’s the Electric Lip Plumper which instructs you to stick your lips out and make a “duck face” in order to make a very tight suction. Then fire it up at a low, medium or high setting for your maximum satisfaction. I’m not sure people are actually using this one for what it is being advertised for! And what burns you may be Ziip, an electro-current lip-plumping device, used in combination with an expensive conducting gel. Reviewers warn that without gel, you risk a burn. The device and a year’s supply of the gel will set you back $1200 – with results lasting just a day or two.
As for me, I’m sticking to fillers, which can last up to a year or more – at a much more reasonable price. Lip fillers with our top injectors are a much better choice with no risk of burn – and Advanced is offering $250 off on every syringe of lip filler that you purchase during the month of February so pucker up!
